Day by Day

Your Itinerary

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer to your hotel in Moshi. Meet your trekking guide for a briefing and gear check. Spend the day resting and acclimating to the new environment.

Drive from Moshi to Rongai Gate (about 4-5 hours), where you will complete the park registration. Begin your trek through farmlands and pine forests to Simba Camp at 2,600 meters. The 8-kilometer hike takes 3-4 hours. Enjoy the gentle ascent, ideal for the first day.

Continue the trek through moorland to Second Cave Camp at 3,450 meters. The 7-kilometer hike takes 3-4 hours. Enjoy stunning views of Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim.

Trek across the moorland towards Kibo, with panoramic views of the mountain. Arrive at Kikelewa Camp at 3,600 meters, set in a beautiful valley. The 9-kilometer hike takes 5-6 hours.

A steep climb up grassy slopes offers superb views of the wilderness area. Reach Mawenzi Tarn Camp at 4,330 meters, situated beneath the dramatic spires of Mawenzi. The 6-kilometer trek takes 3-4 hours. Afternoon acclimatization hike to higher elevations before returning to camp.

Cross the lunar desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach Kibo Hut at the base of the Kibo Crater wall. The 8-kilometer hike takes 5-6 hours. Early dinner and rest in preparation for the summit attempt.

Midnight start for the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters). Reach the summit at sunrise, take in the spectacular views, and take photos. Descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut. The ascent takes 6-8 hours, and the descent covers 16 kilometers, taking 4-5 hours.

Final descent to Marangu Gate, situated at 1,830 meters. The 20-kilometer descent takes 5-7 hours. Collect summit certificates at the gate and transfer back to Moshi for a celebration dinner and relaxation.

Depending on your flight schedule, you may have time to explore Moshi or relax. Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure.
